Our History

We are a trusted local business and we pride ourselves on the quality of our work, earning many of our clients through personal recommendations. In 2021 H. Brett & Son celebrated its 100th anniversary and in 2023 it was also the 50th anniversary of the Blake family ownership of Brett’s

Established 1921

Henry Brett started as ‘H. Brett Monumental Masons’ at 75 Norwich Road in 1921. Later, Henry brought his son, Maynard into the business and became H. Brett & Son. After Henry passed away in 1944 Maynard continued to run the business along with his wife Eileen. In 1967 Maynard died suddenly leaving Eileen to run the business alone.

Eileen employed Alan Blake, an experienced stone carver and letter cutter, to help out and she finally sold the business to Alan in April 1973 after Alan’s son Paul had joined the firm as an apprentice. Alan continued Brett’s relationship with local undertakers and was able to grow the monumental business enabling him to wind down the sign writing side.

Alan continued to develop H. Brett & Son and he introduced his two younger sons, Keith and Kevin. The firm continued to expand and not only were they making top quality memorials but also stone and marble fireplaces, marble furniture and granite worktops.

Loyalty & Experience

Expansion continued and in 2004 Mike Howell of the original M.B. Howell stonemasons of Fakenham decided to retire, so Bretts decided to buy the business and Mike continued for several more years in a part time capacity.

In 2011 a similar event took place at Kings Lynn, Alan purchased an old family business, A.F. Holman & Son Memorial Masons, which was established in 1896. This had been managed by Eric Trigg (originally apprenticed by Mr Holman) for several years and was looking to amalgamate with H. Brett & Son. Eric handed over the reins to the Watton company and has remained in-house to this day as an experienced member of the team. In fact, it is 60 years since he first joined.

By this time Alan had retired and the firm had become a limited company under the directorship of Paul, Keith and Kevin at the helm. They established a working relationship with more local funeral directors.

Long-serving Masons

The company has continued to develop with the tremendous support of a team of masons who were fully trained by the Blake family. Ady Wood has served 27 years and is now heading up a management team along with Simon Boutle (who is the grandson of Maynard and Eileen Brett) who has served 20 years and Daniel Jones serving 9 years. Between them they have served H. Brett & Son for more than 56 years. We have a very experienced and empathic front house team across the three branches, who between them have over 30 years experience.

Their takeover was formally completed on 31st July 2023. Paul, Keith and Kevin Blake remain on board in a consultancy capacity, sharing their vast array of skills and experience to allow H. Brett & Son, M.B. Howell and A.F. Holman to continue to offer their excellent professional service to their ever growing client base.
